The UAB Music Technology Academy provides a unique opportunity for music students and educators to gain exposure to the vast array of computer-based technologies for the creation, performance and study of music. On Saturday, November 7, 2008 the academy will present an intensive full-day worship for selected high school music students and K-12 music teachers. The workshop will be held in the UAB Department of Music's state-of-the-art music technology lab and recording studio. Participants will receive a box lunch, T-shirt, and certificate of completion. Through hands-on instructional sessions, informational workshops, and computer music performances, students and teachers will gain useful knowledge and valuable skills for employing music technology into the classroom. Also, this workshop will enhance students’ awareness of college and career opportunities in the field of music technology.
Who May Participate?
High School Students: A limited number of high school students will be selected to participate in the UAB Music Technology Academy. Students may be nominated for consideration by their teachers, music supervisors, principals, or others who have served in a capacity to assess academic and musical performance, personality and behavior, and general interest. To nominate a student, click here to complete the nomination form. Nominated students must submit the online application by October 20, 2008 for full consideration. Students seeking to apply on their own may do so but must secure a nomination to the academy as specified above. All students should click here to complete the application (It is not necessary to wait for nominations to be submited before completing the application form).
K-12 Music Teachers: Spaces are limited. Teacher registration will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. To complete the teacher registration form, click here. Teachers may receive up to 6 hours of professional development credit for participating in this event. Contact your district supervisor for details.
All participants will be notified of their acceptance status by October 31, 2008.
What Will Be Learned?
Sessions for students will focus on multimedia production, recording engineering, and music production. The multimedia production component introduces technologies for delivering digital media, particularly music, over the internet. The recording engineering component introduces technologies used in a professional recording studio, including analog and digital recording, mixing, and mastering. The music production component introduces technologies for creating music on computers, including Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI), sequencing, scoring, looping and sampling.
Sessions for teachers will focus on multimedia production, computer assisted instructional tools, and sequencing and scoring techniques. The multimedia production component introduces technologies for creating and improving websites and creating podcasts. The computer assisted instructional tools component will demonstrate programs for encouraging students to practice, as well as teaching music theory and ear training skills. The sequencing and scoring component will help teachers become familiar with notation and sequencing programs well-suited for musical arrangements, accompaniments, practice aids and worksheets.

The academy is held on the campus of UAB in the music department’s
state-of-the-art music tech lab and recording studio.
When Is It Held?
Saturday, November 8th, 2008, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Additionally, interested participants will receive priority seating to the Computer Music Ensemble Concert on Friday, November 7th at 7:30 pm.
