Propellerhead's Reason Virtual Recording Studio


What Is It?

The UAB Music Technology Academy provides a unique opportunity for high school students gain exposure to the vast array of computer-based technologies for the creation, performance and study of music. On Saturday, November 14, 2009 the academy will present an intensive full-day workshop for selected high school students. The workshop will be held in the UAB Department of Music's state-of-the-art music technology lab and recording studio. Participants will receive a box lunch, T-shirt, certificate of completion and be eligible for valuable door prizes. Through hands-on instructional sessions, informational workshops, and computer music performances, participants will gain useful knowledge and valuable skills for making music with technology. The academy will also enhance students’ awareness of college and career opportunities in the field of music technology.

Who May Participate?

High School Students: A limited number of high school students will be selected to participate in the UAB Music Technology Academy. Students may be nominated for consideration by their teachers, music supervisors, principals, or others who have served in a capacity to assess academic and musical performance, personality and behavior, and general interest. To nominate a student, click here to complete the nomination form. Nominated students must submit the online application by October 30, 2009 for full consideration.


Students seeking to apply on their own may do so but must secure a nomination to the academy as specified above. All students should click here to complete the application (It is not necessary to wait for nominations to be submitted before completing the application form).

All participants will be notified of their acceptance status by November 3, 2009.


What Will Be Learned?

Sessions will focus on music production, recording engineering, and web design. The music production component introduces technologies for creating music on computers, including Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI), sequencing, scoring, looping and sampling. The recording engineering component introduces technologies used in a professional recording studio, including analog and digital recording, mixing, and mastering. The web design component introduces technologies for creating blogs and delivering digital media, particularly music, over the internet.


Where Is It Held?

The academy is held on the campus of UAB in the music department’s state-of-the-art music tech lab and recording studio.

Saturday, November 14th, 2009, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.

What Does It Cost?


The academy is $25. This cost includes lunch, a T-shirt and a certificate of completion. Also, at the end of the camp, all participants will be entered in drawings for valuable door prizes.
