Marc Reed , DMA

Dr. Marc Reed is Assistant Professor of Trumpet and Assistant Director of Bands at The University of Alabama at Birmingham. His responsibilities include teaching applied trumpet, conducting the symphony band, teaching brass skills; and assisting with the Marching Blazers, wind symphony, and Blazer Basketball Band.

Dr. Reed holds a Doctor of Musical Arts Degree in Trumpet Performance and Brass Pedagogy from the University of North Texas, Master of Music Degree in Trumpet Performance from The University of North Texas, and Bachelor’s Degrees in both Music Education and Trumpet Performance (with a jazz emphasis) from Drake University. Dr. Reed studied trumpet with Keith Johnson, John Holt, Richard Giangiulio, and Andrew Classen. He studied wind conducting as his related field of study at The University of North Texas with Eugene Corporon and Dennis Fisher.

Dr. Reed previously served on the faculties of Waldorf College as Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Instrumental Activities; Drake University as Artist Teacher of Trumpet, and The University of North Texas as a Doctoral Trumpet Teaching Fellow. Dr. Reed was the Applied High Brass Instructor at The Colony High School, Griffin Middle School, and Lakeview Middle School in the Lewisville, Texas Independent School District, for five years. Students in The Colony won best of center, were selected to the Texas All-Region, All-District, and All-State Bands; performed with the Greater Dallas Youth Orchestra, won the Greater Dallas Youth Orchestra Wind Symphony Concerto Contest, and have been accepted to music schools throughout the south.

Dr. Reed was a three-year member of the internationally acclaimed North Texas Wind Symphony, directed by Eugene Corporon. He was also a two-time semi-finalist at the National Trumpet Competition in Washington, D.C., and is a contributing member of the International Trumpet Guild Journal’s Recording Review and Book Review staffs. He specializes in French works for solo trumpet and is currently collaborating with Charles Chaynes on an article discussing the composer’s compositional traits. Dr. Reed can be heard on over a dozen recordings on the DJ Music, Mark, Kalvier, and GIA Windworks labels. He is in demand as a performer, conductor, clinician, adjudicator, and pedagogue throughout the country.
