A native of Appleton, Wisconsin, Jeremy Grall received the Bachelor of Music degree in guitar performance from the Scheidt School of Music, University of Memphis, under the tutelage of Dr. Lily Afshar. In 1999, he received the Master of Music degree in guitar performance from the Yale School of Music, where he was a scholarship student of Benjamin Verdery.
In addition to his academic studies, Jeremy spent four summers studying as a scholarship student at the Aspen Music Festival under internationally renowned guitarist Sharon Isbin, chair of the guitar department at the Juilliard School. He also has received additional coaching in performance from such artists as Michael Nicollela, Oscar Ghiglia, Scott Tennant, Seymour Bernstein, Ricardo Iznaola, Lorenzo Michelli, Adam Holzman, Steven Aaron, and Steven Robinson. Jeremy has also studied jazz guitar for three years with former Count Basie Big Band guitarist, Charlton Johnson.
In 2001, Jeremy was first prizewinner of the Classical Guitar division of the Beethoven Club Young Artist Competition. Jeremy has performed on the Christian Brothers University Guest Artist Series, the Avanti Young Artists Series in Memphis, and new music concerts at the Aspen Music Festival. In addition to his guitar studies at the University of Memphis, Jeremy Grall has also completed extensive studies in musicology. In 2009 Jeremy received his Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Memphis. His dissertation combines his interests in musicology, music theory, and performance and is titled “An Analytical Edition of Giovanni Kapsberger’s Partite sulla Folia: Ornamentation, Performances Practices, and Compositional Structures in Kapsberger’s Folia Variations.” He has presented his research on Kapsberger at both international and regional music theory conferences such as the Cardiff University Music Analysis Conference in Cardiff, Wales and the Society for Music Theory South-Central Chapter. Jeremy’s research interests include performance practices and theory of the Renaissance and early Baroque, aesthetics, popular music, and music cognition.
Before arriving at UAB, Jeremy was an Assistant Professor of Music and the Music Program Director at Nashville State Community College. There, Jeremy helped to create the most comprehensive two-year music program in the state, thereby allowing the creation of the only dual-admission program in music within Tennessee with Tennessee State University. Jeremy also taught as an adjunct instructor at the University of Memphis and at the Aspen Music Festival’s Community Outreach Program.
A versatile musician, Dr. Grall also enjoys performing in jazz, rock, and soul genres. In his free time, he is an enthusiastic triathlete and recently completed the Ironman USA, Ironman Wisconsin, and Ironman Louisville triathlons.
