Philip Copeland, B.M. - The University of Mississippi; M.M. - Mississippi College; and D.M.A. - Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, is Assistant Professor of music in choral music and music education at UAB. Dr. Copeland is in his fifth year of teaching where he serves as Director of Choral Activities. He conducts the Concert Choir (45 voices) and the Women's Chorale (25 voices) while teaching courses in conducting and music education. Before coming to UAB, Dr. Copeland served on the choral music faculty with Jerry Jordan at the University of Mississippi.
Choirs under Dr. Copeland's direction have distinguished themselves on the national and international stage. In February, the UAB Concert Choir will perform at the 2006 Southern Regional Convention of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) in Charleston, West Virginia. This past summer, the UAB Concert Choir won two awards at the prestigious Florlilege Vocal de Tours in Tours, France and performed at the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris, France. While at the University of Mississippi, his choir won the top award and gold medal at the first-ever Choral Olympics in Linz, Austria. On that same tour they performed concerts in Helsinki, St. Petersburg, and Munich. Dr. Copeland has recently been invited to conduct Mozart's Solemn Vespers at Carnegie Hall with Mid-America productions.
Dr. Copeland recently presented sessions at state, regional and national conventions of the American Choral Directors Association in the area of technology. He also edits the Alabama ACDA newsletter "Reprise" and serves as clinician/adjudicator throughout the southeast.
