Leonard Candelaria, DMA


Dr. Leonard A. Candelaria was appointed to the position of Associate Professor of Trumpet and Artist in Residence at UAB in August of 2003 after having served as Visiting Professor for one year. Prior to joining the UAB music faculty, Dr. Candelaria was for twenty-eight years a faculty member of the College of Music at the University of North Texas, the largest school of music in the United States, where he earned the prestigious title, Regents Professor of Music and was the recipient of the Shelton Excellence in Teaching Award.

Internationally recognized as one of America's distinguished artist teachers of the trumpet, his solo concerts and recitals in the United States, Europe, Asia and Mexico have been lauded by audiences and music professionals alike for the spectacular virtuosity and high artistry of his playing. Sought after as a master teacher, Dr. Candelaria has received numerous invitations to present master classes in many of the world's most prestigious musical institutions and has served as a juror and guest artist for numerous international competitions and festivals. Candelaria has also exercised significant leadership in the trumpet-playing world through his activities as 1993-95 President of the 7,000-member International Trumpet Guild (ITG) and in May 2003 he was presented with the ITG Award of Merit in recognition of a lifetime of significant achievement in the trumpet playing and teaching professions. He currently serves as a member of the ITG Board of Directors and as Chair of the Carmine Caruso International Jazz Trumpet Solo Competition sponsored by the Herb Alpert Foundation and ITG. In November 2004 he will host the Ellsworth Smith International Solo Trumpet Competition on the UAB campus.

Leonard Candelaria appears in concerts, recitals and master classes as an Edwards Performing Artist under the sponsorship of the Edwards Instrument Company, a division of the Getzen Company.
